چکیده

Investigations of cardiorespiratory functions in pulmonary diseases have in recent years contributed much to the understanding of the development of pulmonary heart disease. Harvey et al.’ in a recent publication have stressed the importance of anoxia in patients with chronic pulmonary emphysema as a cause for the deterioration of heart function. According to them, acute anoxia may precipitate the development of congestive heart failure and the relief of anoxia may bring about marked improvement in cardiac function. The main causes of acute anoxia may be bronchial obstruction and acute pulmonary infection. Two cases of emphysema were recently observed in which the development of acute pulmonary infection and anoxia was associated with congestive heart failure. Recovery from the infection and anoxia was accompanied by regression of the signs of congestive heart failure. In one case, also, the interesting effects of treatment with adrenocorticotropic hormone on pulmonary functions in the different stages of pulmonary emphysema were recorded.

Effects of Racemic Epinephrine Inhalation

Epinephrine inhalation is now widely used to provide bronehodilator therapy for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema. In this study a variety of cardiorespiratory effects following epinephrine inhalation have been examined to compare responses in normal and emphysematous subjects, and to evaluate possible differences between inhalational and parenteral usage of the drug. Since ...

Pathogenesis and management of virus infection-induced exacerbation of senile bronchial asthma and chronic pulmonary emphysema.

The number of senile patients with therapy resistant bronchial asthma, chronic pulmonary emphysema increases due to the habit of smoking and increased number of older people, and these inflammatory pulmonary diseases are the leading causes of death worldwide. Rhinoviruses cause the majority of common colds, and provoke exacerbations of bronchial asthma and chronic pulmonary emphysema. Here, I r...

Diaphragmatic paralysis: a clinical imitator of cardiorespiratory diseases.

Diaphragmatic paralysis has a predictable effect on lung function. However, the symptoms depend on the preexisting heart-lung diseases and may mimic various cardiorespiratory processes. We describe the presentation in six patients. In a fit man, unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis caused dyspnea only at strenuous exercise. In a patient with emphysema it caused dyspnea mainly when carrying light ...

Focus on the Lung

Both HIV-1 infection and chronic alcohol abuse adversely affect lung health. For example, through multiple mechanisms, chronic alcohol abuse increases one's susceptibility to pneumonia, particularly pneumonia caused by certain serious pathogens. Similarly, pneumonia caused by opportunistic pathogens is very common in HIV-infected patients, at least in part because HIV-1 attacks the immune cells...

Comparison between effects of pressure support and pressure-controlled ventilation on lung and diaphragmatic damage in experimental emphysema

BACKGROUND In patients with emphysema, invasive mechanical ventilation settings should be adjusted to minimize hyperinflation while reducing respiratory effort and providing adequate gas exchange. We evaluated the impact of pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) and pressure support ventilation (PSV) on pulmonary and diaphragmatic damage, as well as cardiac function, in experimental emphysema. ...
